Tuesday 11th June saw the 2024 GLL Sport Foundation Awards Evening take place at West Reservoir Centre in Stoke Newington. This event is hosted every year to celebrate the achievements of athletes who have been successful in gaining support from the foundation for that year.
In 2024/25 the Hackney group comprises of 58 athletes from across 21 different sports, ranging from those aged 12 to those in their 60s. As part of the event, athletes get to hear more about their fellow Hackney sports people as well as have their award presented to them, enjoy some entertainment and some hot food.
This year’s entertainment was provided by Mandeville Primary School’s dance group, who finished in first place in the South East regional school dance competition, allowing them to compete at The Great Big Dance Off finals, against schools from across the country, in a late June. We are proud to be supporting the school to attend the finals by assisting with transport costs and we were so pleased to have them bring such energy and positivity to the event with their brilliant dancing.
As part of the evening, we also held a Q&A session with international gymnast Tyesha Mattis, who joined the GLL Sport Foundation for the first time this year. Tyesha has previously represented Team GB but subsequently came back from retirement to represent Jamaica, most recently winning a bronze medal on the uneven bars at the Central American and Caribbean Games. Tyesha’s experience made her a great interviewee as she spoke about the incredible support she had received from her family as well as her resilience to work towards her goals.
Following the end of the evening, athletes enjoyed some great Caribbean food and headed home with their GLL Sport Foundation goody bags which contain lots of useful items.
Thank you to everyone who attended, we can’t wait to see you all again next year.
